Hoşgeldiniz / Welcome

Dünyama attığınız bu adımın size yanlız olmadığınızı hissettirmesi ümidiyle...
With the hope that the step you have taken into my world will make you feel you are not alone...

Yeni Yıl / New Year

Bir yıl daha bitiyor...
Neler başardık bu yıl, neler gelecek yıla kaldı?

Bu yıl:
Okula alıştık, arkadaşlarımızla kaynaştık,
Parkla bahçeyle buluştuk,
Salıncakta sallanmaya, kaydırakta sırayla kaymaya alıştık,
Yazın denizle suyla kumla barıştık,
Ata bindik, hamakta uyuduk, yelken açtık,
Artık daha çeşitli gıda tüketebiliyoruz,
Makasla kesmeyi, çamurla oynamayı seviyoruz...

Gelecek Yıl:
Bol bol konuşup açığımızı kapatacağız,
Milli piyango biletine çıkan ikramiyeyi doya doya harcayacağız,
Hoplayıp zıplayıp koşacağız, yüzeceğiz,
Hayatın tadını çıkaracağız...

Another year is ending...
What are the things we have accomplished this year, which have been left for next year?

This year:
We have gotten used to school, mingled with friends,
We have met with parks and gardens,
We have gotten used to swing, took turns in the slide,
We have made peace with sea water sand in the summer,
We have ridden a horse, slept in a hammock, set sail,
Now we can consume more diversified food,
We like cutting with scissors, playing with clay...

Next year:
We will talk in lots and make up for the lost times,
We will spend the money from the lottery ticket in feasts,
We will gambol, run, swim,
We will make the best of life...

There should be something called preemie right, those with tiny bodies who have born so early having had to fight health problems intensely should be relieved for the rest of their lives, should not get sick at all... But that is not the case, they get sick like every other kid. Yes, "every other kid", if you look at the full part of the glass, it is nice to live somethings like every other kid, but if you look at the empty part it is so hard to bare my CAN's sickness state.

In fact it is such a miracle that we are alive on this earth. There used to be epidemics, masses were destroyed, nowadays a new disease comes up every other day. Maybe earth is not such an easy place to live for the mankind after all, definitely not for the tiny ones.

While hospitalized in the NICU, before the time he was originally due, my little one had his first operation, his intestines were knotted. Then his eyes were operated twice. Then the hernia operation. We have a probable eye operation in sequence. And now tonsils get in the way?

Two small tonsils got so big that they have covered the throat gap all together, each breath is a torture... Doctors, medications, vaccinations, sleepless nights and some piece at last. For how long we will see, they say operation, they say general anesthesia, they know what it means to wait at that door, they know don't they, they want me to hand over my CAN and wait...

What will happen happens, I am helpless. I couldn't stop his early birth, I couldn't protect his health, when I said "I can not take care of this kid", they said "no one can take of him better than you do", I did not believe them, but I should trust CAN and his strong will to live which has brought us thus far. All I can do is to say that, he has been through so much and has come through, he will do so now and ever.

Yağmur / Rain

Eskiden severdim yağmuru, romantik gelirdi yağmurlu havalar, uyumayı da severdim ya uyurdum böyle havalarda, bazen de ıslanmayı severdim sokaklarda, arabanın camının buğulanmasıydı tek derdim... Ama CAN'dan sonra bu da değişti. Güneşi göremeyince içim kararır oldu. Çünkü ne zaman hava kapatsa sanki CAN kötüye giderdi o hastane günlerinde, güneş iyilik halinin habercisi gibiydi.

O günlerde duymayı en çok sevdiğim cümle "merak etme, iyilik hali devam ediyor"du. "Merak etme" kelimeleri öylesine değerliydi ki;

I used to like rain in the past, rainy days seemed romantic, I liked sleeping so I slept in those days, sometimes I liked walking in the street getting wet, my only problem was the fog on my car window... But this changed after CAN. I felt blue when I couldn't see the sun. Because whenever the weather got cloudy it seemed as though CAN got worse in those hospital days, the sun was the messenger of good times.

"Don't worry, his good state continues" was the sentence I loved to hear those days. "Don't worry", those words had;
   - there is nothing bad to worry about,
   - you are not alone, you do not need to worry, I am worrying instead,
   - you are worried I know, I will tell it all, just wait a little,
   - ... and similar beautiful meaning for me.

Is it possible for a person not to worry, for those eyes not to cloud and become a flood knowing the war that tiny body is fighting. Instead of saying how much more time is needed, I should be thankful for today and make the best of it knowing that each day my baby grows and gets stronger. Managing to evaluate today not with respect to what it should be, but with respect to what it was yesterday, checking for improvement and living happily with that. Walking in your own path far far away from norms, normals, comparisons. This should be possible but it is not easy, there are too many rules and prejudices.

But don't worry, sun comes up eventually after every rain...

How many real friends does a person has in life? How much is few, how much is many? How long does it take to build a friendship? The ones blossoming in a short time without long past years, are they more remarkable? How often do you interact with a person you call a friend? Which is more important, to speak every day or to have something to speak of each time you get together? Who is a friend, who make up friends? What is that thing that ties up people so closely, that increases as we share?

I do not know, but I feel lucky. I am thankful for the existence of people in my life who I can call my friend. Because I know I wouldn't be where I am now if it wasn't all my friends, and primarily my husband (my best friend, my soul-mate). And I wish my CAN has this kind of treasure as well. People who listen, understand, accept as is, love and support...

They used to say incubator sibling-ship when we were in the NICU, now we send armful of love to all those siblings from the buttom of our hearts, without crying, smiling!

Yardım Edebilmek / To be able to Help

Hepsine destek olalım, çünkü her çocuk buna değer...

What a beautiful feeling it is to be able to help,
To be able to share sincerely without any paybacks,
It is also very important to make the helped one be comfortable as is the helper,
Because nobody should feel lacking should not be left in need, nor marginalized,
Mostly the babies and children all of their needs should be fulfilled!

A person should not only think about oneself but should be able to think of others,
In reality don't we all need things that money can not buy?
Love, affection, honesty, understanding, sincerity...
Then don't we all need each other?
Then instead of waiting to take when we need one day let's give today!

The one born as a 25 weeker,
Also the one who has a cross-eye,
Also the one who dashes while sitting,
Also the one who is in hospital stay,
Also the one who has therapy,
Also the one who has special education,
Let's support all, because every kid is worth it...

Shall we make a wish tree this new year,
And everyone shall make another's wish come true,
Shall we be together frankly, dearly,
Without judging, without hurting, without getting hurt,
Let's live a year peacefully, happyly, with health where everything gets better...

Küçük Mutluluklar / Bits of Happiness

I have liked those small button-like sweets covered with colorful candy and having chocolate taste inside ever since my own childhood. Once a family friend had brought us a box as tall as I was then and it had lasted so long, I had liked it so much. Although not a very healthy diet I have accepted their place in children's lives. But I have never liked those colored tastes as much until my CAN's teacher came running down the stairs saying, "CAN ate an M&M"! How, my CAN has taken something in his hand and ate it biting with his own choice, and at school, like a joke but true :)

I know that most people would say what's the occasion, but those who has lived it would know those first bites could be precious...

How are dreams linked with reality? What kind of a communication channel exists between the day and night of human brain? How come one who is far away feels someone or something during the day or night? Is this some kind of a cosmic energy like some say or are all only made up of coincidences? I do not know, but I am moved!

I used to see my CAN in my dreams at night doing things that I was desperately hoping for during the days, it still happens at times... Dreams have fore-tolled me that we were home while we were still in the hospital, that he was sitting without support while he was barely holding his head, that he was walking while he was only crawling. I have seen him talking in full sentences in my dreams, although that has not happened yet I know it will, I just do not know when, I am waiting. Of course not just sitting and waiting, but trying and working like we always do.

My 12 year old niece have seen CAN in his dream. My love was talking, whatever he was saying, my niece was startled and was wondering when this all happened and CAN started talking like this. I could not get hold of my tears for minutes when my sister told me the story, I do not know why. Was it because someone other than myself had met with reality, or because I was not alone, or because I wanted it to happen so much, why? Books, experts, doctors, education, therapy what ever we can do, we are trying as much as possible.

Think of all the things he has succeeded in says his father, he will manage this as well. I say, I know, I hope so, but I feel tired. While I am saying, I do not know how much more strength I have got, my CAN looks me in the eye and says "mommy" and the days he will say "mommy do not be sad" should be close. Even one day he will say, "mommy today you are so beautiful and look so happy", because as he improves I become the happiest person ever :)

143 days, it is easy to say, nearly 5 months, that was how much I managed to carry him before birth, first episode of our neonatal intensive care adventure... Uncountable sepsises, septic shocks, PDA, pulmonary bleeding, pathologic fractures, invagination and first surgery, ROP and laser, intravenous, cut-downs, catheters, sounding lines, BPD, respirator, hood, oxygen support, available existing non-existing medicine...

A little warrior in the middle of all this confusion, a soul fighting for every breath. So that, his hand could go around only half way around his mother's little finger, those fingers like toothpicks. It seems as though I am exaggerating, they can not be that small, but it is true, the one who lives it knows. The happiness of touching that hand is indescribable, worth everything. Although your hands are ones whose skin has cracked due to alcohol based disinfectants, the warmth of your baby passes through that small area and reaches to your heart.

One day his nurse said that I could change his diapers. What ever kind of a courage I had, I did not say no I can not do it, maybe I did not want to miss the chance of touching my baby, because those occasions were rare and precious. Because I was afraid to do him harm by carelessly touching him. But I could not figure out what to do. Maybe all mothers panic but I was all mixed up. Should I check the cables, should I hold CAN, from where, the smallest size of premature diapers were so big for him you needed to use by folding, it was like a three dimensional puzzle designed for an octopus.

One day the doctor said, we will try kangaroo care tomorrow. Like so many other days I was infront of my computer once I got home, of course after I was finished with the milking machine. The doctors used to say something which I only understood vaguely, then I came home and searched and read in the internet to figure out what's what. That day I nearly pealed off my skin while bathing before going to the hospital, beacuse I wanted to be spotless before my skin touched his. I was afraid to breath the first day I had CAN for kangaroo care, I thought if I had a deep breath I could hurt him with my chest moving. His tiny ear got red and wrinkled where he touched me, wizened like a handkerchief, was so thin.

Although with oxygen then came the time to discharge, after 3 weeks of family hospital stay. Then going back to the hospital nearly every day, never ending check-ups, eye surgery and follow-up and and and... Going to the hospital only once a week and the feeling of getting better, and the check-ups prolonging to every other vaccination or once a month and even every 3 months. Nowadays we are going to our doctors every 6 months and some have stopped seeing us. One last doctor who graduated CAN said, let him go to school now.

Yes he was probably inpatient my little warrior but he was stubborn too, he never let go, he held on to life and showed us these days in which I believe everything is possible...

Sometimes a person looks absolutely blank lost in the distance, is it because she wants to be there, or is the goal the journey itself, without any target. At first I wanted to walk sometimes, not to run away or to get out, just to walk and get numb maybe. Then I must have had the energy since I could risk walking, nowadays jumping form somewhere looks a lot more attractive, without any effort, because I am tired. What I look for is the calmness and peace that I assume will come with the sense of emptiness.

But each time I chose the hard way and to stay to continue the fight. Because my little warrier is with us and I continue to hope. Despite the inconsiderateness, indiscretion and ineptitude of people. Why, because I want to preserve the smile on my babies face.

While the people closest to me act like they do not understand or care why I do what I do maybe I expect too much. Empathy, good sense, honesty, understanding and sharing without egoism, don't they exist? Why? If a car hits while crossing the street one day and she dies or even worse lives handicapped then will everything be more understandable for her, is it that a car should hit each and everyone?

Why is it that one has to attack with the instinct of finding what's missing and wrong instead of excepting the dilemma one is going through and give meaning to it? Is it impossible to assume that a person has done her best, all that can be done under the circumstances but still was trapped in the case? Is life such simple math? If something has evolved differently then is it that there are definite mistakes and things to correct? According to who?

Baba / Dad

1. An (doktor)

2. An (anne)
CANımızı alıp bu odadan dışarı çıkabilecek miyiz birgün, yoksa hep oksijen hortumunun izin verdiği şu kısacık mesafede mi yaşayacağız? Babası oğluyla dudakları mı morarıyor acaba, oksimetre çekmiyor mu yoksa gerçekten oksijen ihtiyacı mı var diye endişelenmeden oynayabilecek mi? Ne zaman?

3. An (anı defteri)

4. An (baba)
Sabah tıraş olurken kendi kendine, "Babacım, Babacım"...

5. An (CANımız)
"Baba mama al"

We are very luck, we have a uniquely special father. We are surviving the hardest moments by his existence and his positive approach to life. I have been doing my best to make sure CAN spends as much time with his father as possible since he was a baby. Maybe CAN is such a happy child only for this reason, or maybe they have a common light that shines from within that they carry in their genetic code, I don't know but I love them so much.

Father and son, it is an undescribable happiness to watch them together... My eyes are filled with tears when I see them in their matching pajamas. It is worth everything to watch my little one in his father's embrace with his matching outfit. The first moments that come to my mind when I think of our daddy:

1. Moment (doctor)
You have a son, has born 650 grams, is living just now but he has respiratory problems... This hospital that hospital, there is room no room, can survive the journey can not, he is staying here, we are taking him to neonatal intensive care... The father is a little bit excited, maybe he should stay here or let's calm down a bit...

2. Moment (mother)
Will we be able to take our CAN and get out of this room one day, or will we always live tied to the length of this oxygen tube? Will his father ever have a chance to play with his son without worrying whether his son's lips are turning to purple or if the oximeter is not working properly or does he really have extra oxygen need? When will that be?

3. Moment (journal)
...the never ending faith of his mother and his father's loyalty to his mom...

4. Moment (dad)
Shaving in the morning and talking to himself "Daddy, Daddy"...

5. Moment (our CAN)
"Daddy get food"
