1. CAN ile kaşılıklı bir hamburger yemek
2. CAN ile birlikte bir okul günü üzerine sohbet etmek
3. CANın ilköğretim sürecine sorunsuz adım atmasını sağlamak
4. CANla beraber yardımcı bir enstrümana ihtiyaç duymadan yüzmek
5. CANın bağımsız ata bindiğini görmek
6. CANın her geçen gün yeni başardıklarını izlemeye devam etmek
So we have started :)
Last night I have tried to
explain new year to CAN, I have struggled quite lot. What was a "year"
to start with? Then what happened to it? Was it the pages of the calender that finished? Was it the seasons that passed by? Was it the days that we called 2012 running out? Anyways, I said a new year is like a new notebook I told CAN, we start a new one when the old one's pages are full and it is finished...
This year my son is soooo very lucky! Every new year CAN has drown at least one lottery ticket.
I have let this happen even during the period I was worried sick about
hygiene :) And until today CAN's tickets did not receive any bonus what
so ever. I have decided this was due to some kind of an unestablished
bond between the ticket and CAN, thus I have put the ticket in CAN's
jacket pocket and did not take it out until the lottery was over. As a
result CAN's ticket has a match with the last two numbers, that should
be a sign of luck. Now we are trying to decide if we should spend the
unthinkable amount or buy a new ticket with the sum :)
As every year I wish health, happiness, peace and hope
with my whole heart that the new year brings a lot of money, lots lots
of luck.
I have a number of wishes specifically for 2013 as well:
1. To eat a hamburger with CAN accompanying me
2. To chat together with CAN about a school day
3. To enable CAN to step into primary school period without any problems
4. To swim with CAN freely without the need of any instruments
5. To watch CAN riding a horse on his own
6. To continue watching CAN accomplishing something new every other day
Other
then my CANly wishes, yes I have one! I wish success in his new job to
our positive family member, our dad and my husband, I hope all your hopes do
come true my love :)
Hoşgeldiniz / Welcome
Dünyama attığınız bu adımın size yanlız olmadığınızı hissettirmesi ümidiyle...
With the hope that the step you have taken into my world will make you feel you are not alone...
With the hope that the step you have taken into my world will make you feel you are not alone...

Kabullenmek / Acceptance
Nedir kabullenmek?
Biliyorum zor bir başlangıç yaptı CAN hayata,
Biliyorum hep zorluklar olacak CANımın yaşamında,
Biliyorum ki CAN pes etmeyen mutlu bir çocuk,
Biliyorum CANım hayattan keyif almayı o her zaman başaracak,
CANıma ömür boyu sağlık ve mutluluk diliyorum,
Hayatın karşısına hep iyi insanlar çıkarmasını diliyorum,
Yaşamını anlamlı kılan anılar olsun ve geçmişte kalsın yaşadığı zorluklar istiyorum,
Günü günden güzel olsun istiyorum...
Seni çok seviyorum bebeğim, mutlu yıllar diliyorum :)
What is acceptance?
An absolute realization or a kind of giving up?
What does a person who accepts do?
Does (s)he keep trying or has (s)he quit?
Is acceptance something good or is it the mother of all sins?
Should a person accept or does rebellion work better to make progress?
And while a person not accepting gets torn down does the acceptor suffer less?
Is it really possible to accept and keep fighting?
I am completing this year with these questions and I hope to stay in balance along the line that lays between acceptance and obedience. I hope to keep fighting but not live through unhappiness carried away in expectations. Yes trying, sacrificing, working, researching, being patient is necessary for improvement. And yes a person may not avoid expectations doing these and it is sometimes hard to find the strength to continue while unrealized hopes are postponed to coming springs. But even if progress is slow requiring a lot of effort, the biggest comfort is to see that there is a distance covered when you look back. Maybe the biggest proof that today can be overcomed lies back in the most hopeless day which has gone by and that the day's problem has been resolved...
I know that CAN has had a hard start to life,
I know there will always be difficulties in my CANs life,
I also know that CAN is a happy kid who does not give up,
I know that CAN will always succeed in making the best out of life,
I wish CAN a lifelong health and happiness,
I hope life always introduces him with good people,
I want the hard times to be left in the past as memories making CANs life meaningful,
I ask each day to be better than the one before for him...
I love you so very much my baby, I wish you a happy new year :)

Haketmek / To Deserve
Bazı insanlar çıkagelir hayatınıza sessizce girerler,
Yavaş ve usul adımlarla ilerler,
Yüreğinizin taaa derinliklerine kadar ulaşırlar,
Siz farkına bile varmadan sizden biri olurlar :)
Some people just appear and become a part of your life so very silently,
They move on with slow and soundless steps,
They reach the deepest corners of your heart and soul,
They become a part of you before you know :)
One day comes and such a thing happens that,
The relationship that you may not have noticed till that day takes you alone,
The warmest and a trustworthy friendship has been born,
Giving without being asked for, presenting without taking, being without realizing...
The common part of these relationships for me is CAN,
Is it because he is the center of my life?
Is it because he is so important to me?
Is it because he attracts and ties positive people to himself???
I do not know, but I love CAN and the people he has brought to my life so very much :)

Bay Bay At / Bye Bye Horse
Bir gün CAN bağımsız at binebilir mi bilmiyorum, umarım biner.
Riding becomes apart of many children's lives in one way or the other. Some take it as a sport, some want to inoculate animal love, some may find it fashionable and people sign up their children for a riding course :)
Hippotherapy and adaptive riding attracted my attention a few years ago, but back then could not come across an application around the area we live. We have had the chance to take a few short mother-son touristic riding tours with CAN and that was all. CAN did not seem to like it very much and I did not insist. And a few weeks ago we have become lucky. We have coincided with an instructor who seemed to know what she was doing so intensely that CAN had the courage to try and ride.
To be happy on the back of the horse, to bond with the horse and instructor, in fact we have quite moderate expectations :)
Our way of looking at life is in fact based on CAN being a happy child who can cope with life. A lot of the things we do only aim to take steps to support CAN's development. We attend horse riding courses, the goal is to improve CAN's balance physically and to add on to his self-esteem psychologically. I do not know if CAN will be able to horse ride one day independently, I hope he does. But even if he does not I think it is highly probable that this activity provides a part of the support he may need to take new steps in life.
Another way to push CAN for moving ahead with life without making him unhappy :) Just like the games we play, just like the time he spends at school, just like the swimming lessons, just like thickening the foods he likes every other day, just like Arzu, just like Ezgi, just like Nida, just like Ece, just like Meltems...
Last week leaving the maneage he was waving with joy and saying "bye bye horse"!

Yoksa her zaman ayakta kalmak mı?
What is "success"?
Who is "successful"?
What are the "success" criteria, are they the same for everyone under all circumstances?
Are the "successes" of today and tomorrow the same or does the criteria change?
Is it a success to hold on to life?
Even so should we consider walking or talking as such?
Is it high grades that is needed?
Or to be able to stand on one's feet all the time?
Should unhappy people be considered as successful what ever it is that they have accomplished?
Or the people who fight for success even if it means to harm others be considered successful?
Is it enough when a person considers oneself as successful, what about the evaluation of others?
What about the ones who consider themselves as unsuccessful, are they really so, is there nothing that can be done for them?

Bir Kase Çorba / A Bowl of Soup
- fiziksel açıdan; bebekliğinde anne sütü alırken bile varolan bu problem CAN'ın büyümesini etkilememeliydi,
- özbakım açısından; anne olmadan CAN temel bir gereksinimini karşılayamıyor konumundaydı,
- sosyal açıdan; hareket kabiliyetimizi sınırlıyordu, her türlü evden ayrılma programında CAN'a uygun besinler hazırlanmalı ve taşınmalıydı,
Feeding topic has been a problematic topic for us right from the start. I believe that procedures like entubation and tube feeding in the neonatal intensive care period has caused serious traumas for CAN. Furthermore, we have been through a series of problems starting with trouble in coordinating sucking swallowing and not being strong enough for feeding procedures, continuing with reflux, colic, high palate, structurally big tonsils and adenoids. CAN ended up to be a kid who never got hungry and was unbelievably successful at sabotaging feeding by throw-ups triggered by coughs.
I have read dozens of books on the subject, I do not remember the number of articles I read over the internet, the communication with therapists and pathologists all ended up to be fruitless. Time and patience seemed to be the only cure, but did we have any of those left?
Feeding was a main issue at the center of our life which affected all development process relevant to CAN:
- physically; this problem which existed even when he was a breastfed baby was to be controlled so that it would not affect CAN's growth,
- self-care wise; CAN was at a stage where he failed to fulfill a basic need without his mom,
- socially; this situation restricted mobility, in every program that required leaving the house all food fitting CAN was to be prepared and carried,
- communication skills wise; this case created negative impact, shagging the mother with stress during all those meals in which CAN coughed with the thought that he would be throwing-up any minute.
Days, weeks, months and even years followed one another. My lovely CAN who did not eat anything except a few milk products, who definitely refused to chew, who thought he could survive without eating initially accepted different foods, then thicker textures and particles; the days when he did not have a bite of food at school while eating at home has come to an end also and yesterday he ate a bowl of soup at lunch in preschool. Yes, a bowl of soup! A tiny step for mankind but a veeeery big one for CAN...

Potty training was one of my nightmares. I started planning for this prior to 2010 summer but I was afraid. I got more confused after each article I read on "Is your child ready for potty training?". The most problematic part was "saying it". Our communication with CAN in those days was only made up of him nodding his head as yes/no.
I could not find any explanations that suited me as to when or how potty training of a 25 weeker preemie who had gone through so much could be handled. Finally I made a decision, I talked to CAN, took off his diaper and we got on a journey without exceptions as to day/night nor pee/poop.
I kept saying to my self "you know your son, you can do this, it is time". Although CAN struggled during the initial few days he succeeded in using the toilet with a high ratio by the end of the first one or two weeks. At first I took him to his potty periodically, then I started asking him if he needed to go to the toilet periodically, then I stopped asking and wanted & waited for him to tell (this was only possible by physically showing), then we succeeded in leaving the potty and using the toilet (with an adapter that is), then I started to tell him he could go on his own and he did too with one exception and that was when he woke up from his sleep, not so anymore...
On the weekend father and son decided to take a nap together, it was about an hour and a half later that I heard the toilet cover slap the reservoir and headed for the bathroom thinking that our dad woke up. But when I reached the bathroom my little son was the one sitting on the toilet, our dad was still asleep. CAN continues with something he manages to do even for once and I say potty training is completed :)
There will be hard days and accidents as children go though potty training with their families in their journey to become an individual :) Good luck...
