Bir gün CAN bağımsız at binebilir mi bilmiyorum, umarım biner.
Riding becomes apart of many children's lives in one way or the other. Some take it as a sport, some want to inoculate animal love, some may find it fashionable and people sign up their children for a riding course :)
Hippotherapy and adaptive riding attracted my attention a few years ago, but back then could not come across an application around the area we live. We have had the chance to take a few short mother-son touristic riding tours with CAN and that was all. CAN did not seem to like it very much and I did not insist. And a few weeks ago we have become lucky. We have coincided with an instructor who seemed to know what she was doing so intensely that CAN had the courage to try and ride.
To be happy on the back of the horse, to bond with the horse and instructor, in fact we have quite moderate expectations :)
Our way of looking at life is in fact based on CAN being a happy child who can cope with life. A lot of the things we do only aim to take steps to support CAN's development. We attend horse riding courses, the goal is to improve CAN's balance physically and to add on to his self-esteem psychologically. I do not know if CAN will be able to horse ride one day independently, I hope he does. But even if he does not I think it is highly probable that this activity provides a part of the support he may need to take new steps in life.
Another way to push CAN for moving ahead with life without making him unhappy :) Just like the games we play, just like the time he spends at school, just like the swimming lessons, just like thickening the foods he likes every other day, just like Arzu, just like Ezgi, just like Nida, just like Ece, just like Meltems...
Last week leaving the maneage he was waving with joy and saying "bye bye horse"!
Hoşgeldiniz / Welcome
Dünyama attığınız bu adımın size yanlız olmadığınızı hissettirmesi ümidiyle...
With the hope that the step you have taken into my world will make you feel you are not alone...

Yoksa her zaman ayakta kalmak mı?
What is "success"?
Who is "successful"?
What are the "success" criteria, are they the same for everyone under all circumstances?
Are the "successes" of today and tomorrow the same or does the criteria change?
Is it a success to hold on to life?
Even so should we consider walking or talking as such?
Is it high grades that is needed?
Or to be able to stand on one's feet all the time?
Should unhappy people be considered as successful what ever it is that they have accomplished?
Or the people who fight for success even if it means to harm others be considered successful?
Is it enough when a person considers oneself as successful, what about the evaluation of others?
What about the ones who consider themselves as unsuccessful, are they really so, is there nothing that can be done for them?

Bir Kase Çorba / A Bowl of Soup
- fiziksel açıdan; bebekliğinde anne sütü alırken bile varolan bu problem CAN'ın büyümesini etkilememeliydi,
- özbakım açısından; anne olmadan CAN temel bir gereksinimini karşılayamıyor konumundaydı,
- sosyal açıdan; hareket kabiliyetimizi sınırlıyordu, her türlü evden ayrılma programında CAN'a uygun besinler hazırlanmalı ve taşınmalıydı,
Feeding topic has been a problematic topic for us right from the start. I believe that procedures like entubation and tube feeding in the neonatal intensive care period has caused serious traumas for CAN. Furthermore, we have been through a series of problems starting with trouble in coordinating sucking swallowing and not being strong enough for feeding procedures, continuing with reflux, colic, high palate, structurally big tonsils and adenoids. CAN ended up to be a kid who never got hungry and was unbelievably successful at sabotaging feeding by throw-ups triggered by coughs.
I have read dozens of books on the subject, I do not remember the number of articles I read over the internet, the communication with therapists and pathologists all ended up to be fruitless. Time and patience seemed to be the only cure, but did we have any of those left?
Feeding was a main issue at the center of our life which affected all development process relevant to CAN:
- physically; this problem which existed even when he was a breastfed baby was to be controlled so that it would not affect CAN's growth,
- self-care wise; CAN was at a stage where he failed to fulfill a basic need without his mom,
- socially; this situation restricted mobility, in every program that required leaving the house all food fitting CAN was to be prepared and carried,
- communication skills wise; this case created negative impact, shagging the mother with stress during all those meals in which CAN coughed with the thought that he would be throwing-up any minute.
Days, weeks, months and even years followed one another. My lovely CAN who did not eat anything except a few milk products, who definitely refused to chew, who thought he could survive without eating initially accepted different foods, then thicker textures and particles; the days when he did not have a bite of food at school while eating at home has come to an end also and yesterday he ate a bowl of soup at lunch in preschool. Yes, a bowl of soup! A tiny step for mankind but a veeeery big one for CAN...

Potty training was one of my nightmares. I started planning for this prior to 2010 summer but I was afraid. I got more confused after each article I read on "Is your child ready for potty training?". The most problematic part was "saying it". Our communication with CAN in those days was only made up of him nodding his head as yes/no.
I could not find any explanations that suited me as to when or how potty training of a 25 weeker preemie who had gone through so much could be handled. Finally I made a decision, I talked to CAN, took off his diaper and we got on a journey without exceptions as to day/night nor pee/poop.
I kept saying to my self "you know your son, you can do this, it is time". Although CAN struggled during the initial few days he succeeded in using the toilet with a high ratio by the end of the first one or two weeks. At first I took him to his potty periodically, then I started asking him if he needed to go to the toilet periodically, then I stopped asking and wanted & waited for him to tell (this was only possible by physically showing), then we succeeded in leaving the potty and using the toilet (with an adapter that is), then I started to tell him he could go on his own and he did too with one exception and that was when he woke up from his sleep, not so anymore...
On the weekend father and son decided to take a nap together, it was about an hour and a half later that I heard the toilet cover slap the reservoir and headed for the bathroom thinking that our dad woke up. But when I reached the bathroom my little son was the one sitting on the toilet, our dad was still asleep. CAN continues with something he manages to do even for once and I say potty training is completed :)
There will be hard days and accidents as children go though potty training with their families in their journey to become an individual :) Good luck...

Kararlar Vermek / Making Decisions
CAN bir süredir böyle kararlar veriyordu.
All decisions about a new person are taken by others in the first years. The one is decided to exist, then to be born, when to eat, when to change, what to wear... Although some try to be a part of these procedures, most of the time this effort causes problems and unpleasant cases.
Some children, like my son CAN, take on a leading role in their lives; at least it can be evaluated as so when inspected from the outside. They can look determined to be born as a 25 weeker, hold on to life or not to eat food. But they do not know the consequences of these decisions (!) and they may only be obeying the call of the nature :)
But a day comes and those tiny souls really but definitely start making decisions of their own that they will bare the consequences of. Growing up, maturing must be something like this. Everyday actions like these mean a lot more to me than the development evaluation surveys. CAN has been making such decisions for a while. But today a few have followed each other, in fact the whole day progressed as so and I am now sure that CAN is ready to take on life as a responsible individual (!), at least he thinks so :)
Yes today we were to wake up to a holiday morning, CAN must have known this thus he slept until 10 am this morning. He wanted to go outside after breakfast. This was fine but according to the plans of us adults, dad was to work and mother-son were to go out. CAN's plan was not so. He had decided that today was father-son day. He explained so beautifully and without grumbling that he wanted to be with his father that it was impossible to say no. They went out, mother worked at home. It was OK, they both had happy smiles when they returned, maybe this was best for everyone. After lunch CAN settled in the couch in the living room, mom was to go on to sleep and he was to sit there. He even gave me a good sleep kiss. It was unbelievable. The guy was explicitly saying that he slept late today and he was not ready for the afternoon nap yet. Then again he was doing it so sweetly and moderately that I was there to accept vulnerablely.
I hope life always gives you the chance to make and apply your own decisions, may your happiness be lifelong my little one. I love you a bit more every other day with all your ways, with your independent and unique personality. I hope each day of yours be better than the one before my CAN.

Küçük şeyler, mini mini dokunuşlar, her gün hayatla buluşsalar :)
Sometimes life lets people experience surprise happinesses. You think you have waken to an ordinary day, but it is not so, that day is magical. Everything has a different smell, sound, charm that day. Today is one of those days...
I have woken up around eight this morning like always, I checked to see that CAN was asleep, I completed one or two chores and my little one woke up. I lied beside him for a little while to cuddle, we got off the bed, completed the bathroom part, had breakfast and got ready for school. Just as we were about to leave, there was a note on the door from our dad and it said "I did not take the car". CAN was happy to learn that we were going to school by car. I dropped CAN to school, I made a plan walking back to the car.
I did something I have been wanting to do, but had not managed to find enough time and the car together thus far. It was so good, a peaceful morning, new baby smell, mmmm... Time flow by so fast and I had to leave to pick up CAN from school. The day was determined to continue without loosing any of its charm.
During the few minutes I spent in school while picking up CAN everybody started talking one after another like they had made an unspoken agreement. For starters the music teacher said "CAN participates in songs very well". Then the english teacher told me how CAN pulled up his chair to sit right in front of him and watched him playing so carefully. He said "I like your kid, he is a lovable guy". And finally the primary class teacher came, she had found CAN's story book, but hadn't recognized it since it was not in his bag and she was sad since they had not had the chance to read it in class, because "CAN sits still and listens so well while reading" she was saying...
Small things, tiny miny touches, wish they meet up with life every day :)
Tam kapıdan çıkacakken, kapının üzerinde babamızdan bir not "arabayı almadım" yazıyor üzerinde. CANa söylediğimde çok mutlu oldu arabayla gidecek olmasına okuluna. CANı okula bıraktım, arabaya doğru yürürken hemen bir plan yaptım.

Okula Dönüş / Back to School
Another day melted away from our lives... Or we have grown up one more day :)
Benim için biraz endişeli;
CAN acaba 2 haftadır evde benimle olduktan sonra nasıl tepki verecekti okula gitmeye?
Hiç korktuğum gibi olmadı. Okul kapısındaki karmaşaya rağmen CAN oldukça sakindi. Ağlayanlar, annesini bırakmayanlar, türlü türlü manzaralar arasından sıyrılıp öğretmenini ve yeni sınıf dolabını bulduk, ayakkabılarımızı değiştirdik ve öpüşüp vedalaştık. Arkasını dönüp gitti bizim oğlan tereddütsüz, ben de döndüm arkamı çıktım ama aklım ruhum orada kaldı. Acaba döndüğümde nasıl bulacaktım CANımı, ararlar mıydı sorun çıkarsa??? CAN beni yine şaşırttı. Sevinç çığlıkları atıyordu merdivenlerden inerken onu almaya gittiğimde, arabaya binene kadar bekledim.
Anne: Okul nasıldı?
CAN: İyi :)
Anne: Özlemiş misin okulunu?
CAN: Evet!
Anne: Ne kadar özlemişsin?
CAN: Çok :)
Biraz duygusal;
Oldukça koşturmacalı;
2 haftadır CAN ile kucak temasında olmaya bağlı ertelenen işler ve biriken yorgunluk üst üste gelince günün sonunda kıpırdayacak halim kalmamıştı.
Bir gün daha geçti gitti ömrümüzden... Veya bir gün daha büyüdük :)
We had a 2 week school break due to our tonsillectomy surgery, when I
say school I mean the preschool we have been attending for the last 2
years. And our start date coincided with the new year start of our preschool
and the first day of the first grade primary schools.
I was a bit worried;
How would CAN react to going back to school after 2 weeks at home with me?
It
was not like I feared. CAN was quite calm despite all the hustle at the
school entrance. Some were crying, some did not want to leave their moms, we managed to find our teacher and our new stand sailing
through all sorts of scenes, we changed our sneakers and kissed our
goodbyes. Our boy turned and left without any second thoughts, I
also turned around and left but my mind and soul were to be left
behind. How would I find my CAN when I returned, would they call if
there was a problem??? CAN surprised my again. He was laughing and
shouting with joy coming down the stairs when I was there to pick him
up, I waited until we were in the car.
Mom: How was school?
CAN: Fine :)
Mom: Have you missed school?
CAN: Yes!
Mom: How much did you miss it?
CAN: A lot :)
A bit sentimental;
Will my little one really start primary school next year?
Since
the 4+4+4 system has been introduced I have been worrying, did not
sleep for days. 60 month old little ones would start primary school. My
CAN had been born too early anyway, he was so little, how would he start
primary school, it wouldn't be, it couldn't happen I said as they have
ruled out the mandatoriness for 60-66 monthers and we put the primary
school file back on the shelf for this year. But when I saw the little ones in front
of the school very close to our house, the one that CAN would be
enrolled in if he were to go to state school, I felt all knotted up
inside.
Quite busy;
With the effect of the piled up work due to being in lap-touch
with CAN in the past 2 weeks and the added up tiredness, I did not have
the strength to move at the end of the day. Another day melted away from our lives... Or we have grown up one more day :)
