Hoşgeldiniz / Welcome

Dünyama attığınız bu adımın size yanlız olmadığınızı hissettirmesi ümidiyle...
With the hope that the step you have taken into my world will make you feel you are not alone...

Okula Dönüş / Back to School

Benim için biraz endişeli;
CAN acaba 2 haftadır evde benimle olduktan sonra nasıl tepki verecekti okula gitmeye?
Hiç korktuğum gibi olmadı.  Okul kapısındaki karmaşaya rağmen CAN oldukça sakindi. Ağlayanlar, annesini bırakmayanlar, türlü türlü manzaralar arasından sıyrılıp öğretmenini ve yeni sınıf dolabını bulduk, ayakkabılarımızı değiştirdik ve öpüşüp vedalaştık. Arkasını dönüp gitti bizim oğlan tereddütsüz, ben de döndüm arkamı çıktım ama aklım ruhum orada kaldı. Acaba döndüğümde nasıl bulacaktım CANımı, ararlar mıydı sorun çıkarsa??? CAN beni yine şaşırttı. Sevinç çığlıkları atıyordu merdivenlerden inerken onu almaya gittiğimde, arabaya binene kadar bekledim.
Anne: Okul nasıldı?
CAN: İyi :)
Anne: Özlemiş misin okulunu?
CAN: Evet!
Anne: Ne kadar özlemişsin?
CAN: Çok :)

Biraz duygusal;

Oldukça koşturmacalı;
2 haftadır CAN ile kucak temasında olmaya bağlı ertelenen işler ve biriken yorgunluk üst üste gelince günün sonunda kıpırdayacak halim kalmamıştı.

Bir gün daha geçti gitti ömrümüzden... Veya bir gün daha büyüdük :)

We had a 2 week school break due to our tonsillectomy surgery, when I say school I mean the preschool we have been attending for the last 2 years. And our start date coincided with the new year start of our preschool and the first day of the first grade primary schools.

I was a bit worried;
How would CAN react to going back to school after 2 weeks at home with me?
It was not like I feared. CAN was quite calm despite all the hustle at the school entrance. Some were crying, some did not want to leave their moms, we managed to find our teacher and our new stand sailing through all sorts of scenes, we changed our sneakers and kissed our goodbyes. Our boy turned and left without any second thoughts, I also turned around and left but my mind and soul were to be left behind. How would I find my CAN when I returned, would they call if there was a problem??? CAN surprised my again. He was laughing and shouting with joy coming down the stairs when I was there to pick him up, I waited until we were in the car.
Mom: How was school?
CAN: Fine :)
Mom: Have you missed school?
CAN: Yes!
Mom: How much did you miss it?
CAN: A lot :)

A bit sentimental;
Will my little one really start primary school next year?
Since the 4+4+4 system has been introduced I have been worrying, did not sleep for days. 60 month old little ones would start primary school. My CAN had been born too early anyway, he was so little, how would he start primary school, it wouldn't be, it couldn't happen I said as they have ruled out the mandatoriness for 60-66 monthers and we put the primary school file back on the shelf for this year. But when I saw the little ones in front of the school very close to our house, the one that CAN would be enrolled in if he were to go to state school, I felt all knotted up inside.

Quite busy;
With the effect of the piled up work due to being in lap-touch with CAN in the past 2 weeks and the added up tiredness, I did not have the strength to move at the end of the day.

Another day melted away from our lives... Or we have grown up one more day :)

Ameliyatlar / Surgical Operations

CAN, annem, küçücüğüm, herşeyim, seni çok seviyorum bebeğim...

We had tonsillectomy surgery after all that we had so far as invagination, ROP and hernia operations. Although we have been terrified and we have tried to flee, we have surrendered finally. I have a clear conscious, I do not believe we could have had it earlier or we shouldn't have had it at all... There is a time for everything and we have tried it all to avoid this surgery but there was no other way out, the probable benefits of waiting any longer were less than the risks we would be taking, that is we said it is time and we accepted.

My only distress is that CAN had to live through this too, to be forced to leave him on that litter at that door once more, those ever not ending minutes that we had to spend separately, not being able to be with him when he woke up, those mutual tears that flow when we saw each other, those swallows in pain with tears and plead for medication when he could not even drink water...

This will pass too, a routine operation that any child could be faced with, there is nothing to be sorry about, you have been through a lot worse, hopefully this will be the last... Sentences I am so tired of hearing...

"It takes 12 days for the lesion formed after tonsillectomy surgery to heal, during this period children do not eat much and loose around 2 kgs", said our doctor before surgery. And he warned after the surgery that, "today is day zero and we have a check-up 1 month later, he is expected to have fever, antibiotics and pain killers should be given regularly for upcoming 10 days, do not give anything too cold or hot".

CAN, my precious, my little one, my everything, I love you so much my baby...

Aile / Family

What is "family", who is it, where is it, how does it bear, how long does it survive?
So many years that have been shared, so many memories,
That feeling that can not be replaced by any other,
Sometimes sweet sometimes bitter but that unique, undescribable bond...

When happinesses and sorrows in life are experienced,
Who do you call or are you called by first?
Who make you feel you are not along in the middle of helplessness,
Who do you want to hug when shaken by enthusiasm?

With husband, with child,
With mother, with father, with sibling, with their husbands and children,
All together around a table,
It is so beautiful to meet despite everything, for forever :)

Olimpiyatlar / Olympics

Ekip olmak gerekir.

CAN bebekliğinden beri her zaman suyu çok sevmişti. Hafta içi 5 dakika boş vakti olmayan CAN haftasonları da yüzmeye gidecekti. Evet, ilk günler zordu, ama iki haftanın sonunda ekip mutlu, en önemlisi CAN mutlu :)

The Olympics is a bit extra joyous for us this year, we are experiencing a lot of firsts together. Turkey has attended with a record numbered group, the number of women were greater than men, women volleyball and basketball teams qualified for the first time, a women athlete won a gold medal for the first time. We were very proud. The P&G commercial have touched the mothers all around the world.

Michael Phelps who have become a legend by his stunning performance was another exciting issue in our home ... A bit due to CAN starting swimming lessons simultaneously and also due to the things we learned about Phelps. Michael Phelps was diagnosed by ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in primary school period. His family thought he could discharge his energy and calm down by swimming. One more family believed in their child and succeeded.

Naturally not every child can break olympic records, but when a sport is in one's life systematically, it brings in discipline along with concentration. It is easier to focus on meaningful goals for a person, in a life with certain routines. It is important for families to observe their child's different qualifications in early childhood and create environments for the child's potential to flourish. But the families effort alone may not be enough at this point. Teachers, educators, therapists, instructors, doctors and even the whole society have to support this effort with a common understanding. It is necessary to be a team.

CAN has liked water very much ever since he was a baby. Swimming seemed like a good choice for a 5 year old to support his motor development, to increase his self esteem and to add on a new ability. Yes, the mother was disturbed by the current amount of comfort! A new activity plan as starting swimming was created as if there was not enough difficulty in our life. CAN who did not have a free 5 minute time in weekdays would be going swimming in the weekends. Yes, the first days were hard, but now after two weeks the team is happy, most importantly CAN is happy :)

İlk Diş / First Tooth

CAN hastaneden eve ilk geldiğinde hasta olacak diye çok korkuyordum. Herşey steril olmalıydı, eller günde bin defa dezenfekte edilmeliydi, eve yabancı giremezdi... CAN hergün banyo yapmalı, yatak çarşafları hergün değiştirilmeli, kıyafetleri sürekli değişmeli, hatta CAN odasından çıkmamalıydı.

CAN'ın ilk dişleri çıkmıştı. İlerleyen aylarda CAN'ın her ateşi çıktığında aynı konu gündeme geldi, diş çıkarıyor olabilir miydi? Sonunda CAN'ın bütün dişleri tamamlandı.

CAN'ın süt dişleri dökülmeye başlıyor olabilir miydi? İlk kontrol ettiğimde diş sağlamdı. Dün akşamüzeri oral terapi masajı sırasında durum değişmişti, CAN'ın dişi sallanıyordu.

Hemen CAN'ın pedadontistini aradım.

When CAN first made it home from the hospital I was so afraid that he would get sick. Everything had to be sterile, hands had to be disinfected a thousand times a day, no strangers were allowed in the house... CAN took a bath everyday, his bed sheets were changed every day, his clothes were changed constantly, CAN did not leave his room. It was nearly impossible for him to leave his room anyway due to the oxygen concentrator and oximeter which were not made for mobile use.

One day while I was conscious about CAN's mood he became feverish. I called his doctor promptly, luckily she paid a quick visit to us, she examined CAN, she used to drop by frequently anyway, due to the constantly panicking mom who worried about just everything :) She said, probably it is his tooth, the gum has swallowed too. And soon enough CAN's 2 teeth from the mid lower jaw sprouted and we made a very beautiful tooth wheat ceremony.

It was the first time since CAN's birth, that one thing happened on time according to his chronological birthday. Our CAN's first teeth had sprouted. Each time CAN was feverish in the following months the same question was asked, is it a sprouting tooth? At last all of CAN's teeth were completed. This scenario was over, thank God, until yesterday...

Within last few weeks CAN's lower mid tooth which had sprouted first started to turn on its post, it became distorted somehow. Could it be that CAN's first teeth were starting to fall out? When I first checked CAN's tooth was stable. But during the oral therapy massage yesterday afternoon the situation had changed, CAN's tooth was loose.

I called CAN's pedadentist. The timing and the turning movement of the tooth were normal. She asked if I saw the coming teeth. If I did early intervention would be necessary but if not it would be more appropriate to wait for the tooth to loosen more. We checked the inner and outer gums with a light source with his father, but there was no new teeth in sight. We would probably have to wait, but still the doctor had to see it, it was time for the fluorine application too, so we would make an appointment asap.

I can not believe it, my little one is really growing up. Those tiny first teeth that sprouted on time without an influence of the early birth were now leaving their post to the adult followers. I hope those tiny yellowish teeth will be replaced by the whitest pearl drops. Our dentist had said that since the adult teeth starts to form after the age of 3 and CAN did not have any medical conditions that would affect calcification since then the new teeth would not have any problems. Tooth fairy, tooth fairy, where are you?

Adım Adım / Step by Step

Some people want everything to be a piece of cake, they want everything to be accomplished with minimum effort, everybody would want such a life so to speak...

Routine patients if you are a doctor, smart kids if you are a teacher, a great team if you are a manager is something everybody naturally deserves, is that so? What if that is not the case, a patient with numerous matchless health problems comes by or a student with special needs is in the class, what happens then? Are we going to turn our back because these people are different and they need extra care and effort? Or are we going to respond by supporting that person in the fight?

Is it telling the reality to say that it won't happen, it is impossible, can not be done or is it running off? Is it being a dreamer to say that it can happen, to try, to put an effort or is it to stay and fight? Aren't there many people lost or found just due to this differentiating attitude? Aren't the lost people gone forever where the found are known by the whole world?

Success stories are not created by regular proceedings. Why? Because the creator of success stories are the ones who do and live differently than others, who look differently and continue without giving up, who find a way to overcome difficulties, who succeed despite everything... The point reached when everything is perfect can only be the expected inevitable.

My CAN reaching to these days is a success story, even a miracle... I am grateful to all those who have supported us and who have contributed to this journey with their effort and heart. They will be with us in every step we take and they will be proud :) The others? They will continue their ordinary, limited lives in their small world...

Tatil / Holiday

Without making a take along list, without worrying about forgetting something, even without taking much with us, just as leaving for a day trip with some extra caution we have left home last Sunday. In fact the plan was a trip that would last until Friday but it was in a hotel 15 minutes to our house and we have made plans for the nights and would be leaving CAN with grandmas so we would be home anyway and could pick up anything that was necessary.

We have let go of everything this week; we have not attended school, we have not closed our eye or did not do any oral therapy, we have not done any homework, let me say we were all so lazy...

We are swimming in the pool every day with my CAN, his movements have relaxed, he swims across the pool with his armbands and swimming board just flapping his feet without a look of worry in his face enjoying it. My little one trusts himself so much that he leaves his grip of the swimming board and throws water at me as if the child who clang to me inseparably just a short time ago is not him :) Before any time lap I hope CAN can start swimming lessons in the near by pool that is supposed to open next week. I believe water is good for physic and chemistry of CAN.

Today after the swim in the pool we took a shower and were story telling in a day bed all cuddled up with CAN and someone passing by said "ooohhh what a pleasure, I want some too, can I come along?" sincerely. Did somebody really want to be in our place? A childish happiness surrounded me :)
