Adım Adım / Step by Step

Some people want everything to be a piece of cake, they want everything to be accomplished with minimum effort, everybody would want such a life so to speak...

Routine patients if you are a doctor, smart kids if you are a teacher, a great team if you are a manager is something everybody naturally deserves, is that so? What if that is not the case, a patient with numerous matchless health problems comes by or a student with special needs is in the class, what happens then? Are we going to turn our back because these people are different and they need extra care and effort? Or are we going to respond by supporting that person in the fight?

Is it telling the reality to say that it won't happen, it is impossible, can not be done or is it running off? Is it being a dreamer to say that it can happen, to try, to put an effort or is it to stay and fight? Aren't there many people lost or found just due to this differentiating attitude? Aren't the lost people gone forever where the found are known by the whole world?

Success stories are not created by regular proceedings. Why? Because the creator of success stories are the ones who do and live differently than others, who look differently and continue without giving up, who find a way to overcome difficulties, who succeed despite everything... The point reached when everything is perfect can only be the expected inevitable.

My CAN reaching to these days is a success story, even a miracle... I am grateful to all those who have supported us and who have contributed to this journey with their effort and heart. They will be with us in every step we take and they will be proud :) The others? They will continue their ordinary, limited lives in their small world...

Tatil / Holiday

Without making a take along list, without worrying about forgetting something, even without taking much with us, just as leaving for a day trip with some extra caution we have left home last Sunday. In fact the plan was a trip that would last until Friday but it was in a hotel 15 minutes to our house and we have made plans for the nights and would be leaving CAN with grandmas so we would be home anyway and could pick up anything that was necessary.

We have let go of everything this week; we have not attended school, we have not closed our eye or did not do any oral therapy, we have not done any homework, let me say we were all so lazy...

We are swimming in the pool every day with my CAN, his movements have relaxed, he swims across the pool with his armbands and swimming board just flapping his feet without a look of worry in his face enjoying it. My little one trusts himself so much that he leaves his grip of the swimming board and throws water at me as if the child who clang to me inseparably just a short time ago is not him :) Before any time lap I hope CAN can start swimming lessons in the near by pool that is supposed to open next week. I believe water is good for physic and chemistry of CAN.

Today after the swim in the pool we took a shower and were story telling in a day bed all cuddled up with CAN and someone passing by said "ooohhh what a pleasure, I want some too, can I come along?" sincerely. Did somebody really want to be in our place? A childish happiness surrounded me :)

It was not enough to have CAN as a 25 weeker, I was pregnant in my dream, the labor travaill had started 7 minutes apart without any reason again. There was a hospital doctor something close by and we went. The doctor said, the labor has started and we will perform c-section. I said, what are you talking about this baby is only 26 weeks old, I have already given birth to a 25 weeker, I am not delivering this one yet (how come?). I tell my husband that we should go to another hospital, he leaves to bring the car and I wake up...

After the college exams I had many dreams about taking and re-taking that exam for a long period of time and then the university exam was another nightmare, the effects of it were not finished even when I graduated form university. And now the birth of my CAN, my fears are triggered from time to time! Is it the affect of the "one of the tiniest babies ever go home" article or the pregnant friend syndrome I do not know? But I know one thing and that is CAN will be a single child :)

Yaz / Summer

Off off, mevsimlerin değişmesi sadece endişelerin detayını değiştirdi, başka değişen birşey yok!

The summer is here, the heat has climbed over 40 degrees celsius. The days started to go by saying we should get the best out of sea and sun, should not get sun struck, there is the air-condition but we should not get sick... Research has been initiated to add swim lessons to our already busy program. The preschool has shifted to summer mode. CAN has started to stay for lunch at school, he is not eating yet but we hope starting is the half way to finishing :)

We have waited for the weather to get warm during the winter time, we have struggled not to get sick... The spring passed by before we could figure out if it were here or not. And now; was he cold in the sea, did he stay too much in the sun, was the sand on the beach he played clean, was the air-condition onto him, did he sweat to much, is he wet... My my, the changing seasons altered only the details of the worries, nothing major has changed!

This week a mother I met in the social media said, "...all will pass..." after she learned that my CAN was born as a 25 weeker preemie and another replied "unfortunately it does not pass away, it is behind you every instance sweetheart", and I said "the one who has lived through it knows".

Sometimes I say; what if I forgot everything, what if I lost my memory in a split second and opened my eyes to the current situation, would it be possible to accept all and lead a normal happy life without questioning or without a sense of strangeness?

Sümkürebilmek / To be able to blow your nose

"Sümkür, havayı burnundan dışarı üfle" dediğimde havayı hep içine çeken CAN,
Bugün havayı dışarı üflemeyi ve sümkürmeyi başardı,
Islak mendilde gördüğüm bir damla sümük inanılmaz bir manzaraydı, yaşasın!

To able to breath without the ventilator was the first goal,
That meant life!
Then it was necessary to coordinate sucking and swallowing with breathing,
That meant feeding!

At first oxygen support was needed and new goal was to do with 20% in atmosphere,
That was the first step to mobility!
Steroids, inhaled medication, lung x-ray, tomography, pulmonary function test,
Was a journey to the days that respiration problems were out of our agenda!

Blowing tryouts were an important part of our life,
Blowing a whistle, flying pieces of a napkin, rolling a ping-pong ball,
Blowing out candles, blowing bubbles, using a straw, consuming liquids from a glass,
Were all things we have struggled step by step to accomplish!

And today my CAN was able to blow his nose for the first time!
My CAN who always inhaled the air when I said "blow your nose, blow the air out",
Managed to exhale the air and blow his nose today,
The drop of mucus I saw on the wet-towel was a beautiful sight, hooray!

Babalar Günü / Fathers' Day

We have a very good father, so happy :)

According to a study published lately, contrary to the general idea, the effect of father on child's personality is more than the mother. Because the child identifies with the father (s)he sees as a playmate, rather than the mother positioned as the caregiver.

My attempt to do all the work so that CAN could spend more time with his father and the effort to adjust even the sleeping hours according to our father's work schedule may have worked after all. I might have picked a reasonable goal while struggling so that, instead of his mother's worried, anxious, stressed state his father's relaxed, positive, cheerful attitude has more affect on him.

Was our father doing the right thing after all each time he said "well I can not do that because I am his playmate" whenever something unpleasant for CAN came up to be done since he was a baby?

As the NICU team used to say, "the mother is crazy but the father, he is just an angel"...

I hope CAN resembles his father more every other day and becomes a gentle, positive, peaceful, happy and healthy person. Happy Fathers' Day to the father of every child who has a chance to grow up with the father's affection :)

Anne sütü / Mother's milk

Doğurmamaya çalışarak geçen günlerin ardından CAN 25 haftalık olarak doğmuştu.

Her bebeğin anne sütü almaya hakkı olmalı,
Her anne aynı koşullarda olmayabilir hayatta,

After trying not to deliver for days my CAN was born as a 25 weeker preemie. There was nothing I could do for CAN anymore. CAN's faith was in the hands of the doctors and hospital team. I felt completely empty physically and spiritually. I hadn't slept for days, I was tired, I dosed off...

A nurse woke me up after a few hours of sleep. She was telling me I had to go for expressing milk, I had trouble understanding, why, now? The nurse was stubborn and I was weak, I could barely walk, she took me to a room where the pumping machines were and showed me how. After the first round there was a single drop at the side of the container and I was not sure if it were water, milk or sweat. In the respective rounds there were 3 drops 5 drops and then 3cc 5cc and at each session my milk increased. The liquid was at first transparent (colostrum) and then got color, it was like orange milk and with time the color softened to become a yellowish white.

I milked every 3 hours, that is 8 times a day everyday, for 10-15 minutes both breasts simultaneously. We first bought a small deep freezer and then a quite big one. I was cautious about what I ate, because my CAN would grow up drinking this milk. The breast milk formula changed each day and was produced to serve the baby's needs in the best way possible. I was happy thinking about this. I was so happy when they asked for the first milk from the hospital to feed CAN. At last the work I had carried out for CAN was starting to pay off. I was able to provide CAN with mother's milk which was best tolerated by and best supported growth for all babies but especially preemies.

I was wrong, there was something very important I could do for CAN. CAN has had mother's milk until he was 1 year old. The breast pump I used during the neonatal intensive care period created an important bond between me and CAN. Everyday while milking I dreamed of the days I would be with my CAN and thankfully I am able to live them :)

Each baby needs mother's milk,
Each baby must have the right to get mother's milk,
Each mother might not have the same conditions in life,
But each child must receive mother's milk in early childhood,
And each mother must do the best she can to make that possible...
