Neonatoloji Mezunu Olmak / To be a Neonatology Graduate

To be a neonatology student is a messenger of a tough start,
Sometimes it is short companionship, that is only a vaguely memory,
Sometimes it is the beginning of a long relationship that will last for years,
But in either case the people who have crossed roads have a new perspective in life.

It may be defined as the hustle to find an incubator for his child as a father,

Or learning how to pump milk and kangaroo care for a mother,
And it may be a real fight for life or death for a baby,
It is a life changing experience for a family all together.

Graduation from neonatology is both dreamed and dreaded for,
As days turn into nights and nights into days, your babies well-being is your only wish.
And a day comes where graduates hold hands,
To share the load of what has been lived through and the happiness of life...

Bıçak sırtında / On a knife edge

Evet zor,
Evet endişlerle dolu,
Evet belirsizlikler pek çok,
Ama bıçağın sırtında da olsa ilerliyoruz!

CAN büyüyor,
CAN gelişiyor,
CAN mutlu bir çocuk,
Ve CANın ekibi çalışmaya devam ediyor :)

Perhaps one of the hardest concepts in life for mankind is "uncertainty". The "need to know" urge that comes from deep within is maybe evaluated as the basic necessity for control. That is in fact a funny act of ours, where life is an equation with infinite number of variables and there is so little that we are able to control.

A person seems to accept that life is not controllable as (s)he experiences that a lot "ends up in a certain way what so ever" and accepts all as is, and maybe maturation is something like this, being happy with what life brings, doing your best in the meanwhile too...

The life after CAN seems to have contributed so much to my personal development in this sense, I am living the most traumatic and enriching experiences of my life. Life with CAN is clearly a journey on the back of a knife. I use it all the time but today I was curious about the dictionary description of the idiom "on a knife edge" and looked it up and came across this:

"on a knife edge => in a difficult or worrying situation of which the result is very uncertain"

how very well describing us...

Yes it is hard,
Yes it is full of worries,
Yes there are a lot of uncertainties,
But we progress even if it is on a knife edge!

CAN is growing,
CAN is developing,
CAN is a happy kid,
And CANs team keeps working :)

Pazartesi günü CAN öğlen yemeğinden kalkarken "uykum yok" dedi. Biraz oyun oynamasına izin verdim ama sonrasında "biraz yatalım, en azından dinleniriz" diyerek onu ikna ettim. CAN kısa bir süre de olsa uyudu. Salı günü aynı senaryo tekrarlandı. Çarşamba, Perşembe, Cuma ise CAN yatağa gitmesine rağmen uyumadı, uyuyamadı.

Sleep is one of the major issues about babies. When does the baby sleep, how long has the baby slept, how does the baby sleep or is put to sleep are important issues. Furthermore, there is something called sleep education as some put it, since there is an education for everything these days there should be one for this too :)

As on a lot of other subjects, on our case CAN was the educator for this one too. I had experienced the first transition when CAN decided not to wake up through the night since I thought that these were a chance for an extra feed but could not go ahead and wake him for that matter. Then CAN had fixed the day time naps as two and had certain hours for them. What we did was to monitor the developments and provide CAN the comfort he needed by planning according to his needs. Then CAN decided "even two is too much, one is enough". In parallel with his character that suits well with routines and rituals he had the habit of taking a nap after lunch. This was the case until last week.

On Monday after lunch CAN said, "I don't sleep". I let him play for a while but then persuaded him by saying "let's go to bed, at least we will have a chance to rest". CAN slept at least for a short time. The same scenario was repeated on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Thursday, Friday CAN went to bed but did not or could not sleep. And after lunch on Saturday we accepted that this habit could be here to saty and decided to see how he would do.

Result, CAN did not need the afternoon nap anymore! Now it will be, it even is, possible to live the day in full length. It is not necessary to come home or think about where he will sleep. CAN is continuing to grow and it is our duty to adapt, support and make arrangements so that CAN benefits in the best way possible from the new situation.

Hey liberty!

Renkler / Colors

Life is said to start as black & white,
The baby sees the color red initially,
Then each person is said to have a color.
And there is the rainbow!
It holds all the colors within,
It's beauty hidden in the carousal.
There are said to be people who feel colors without seeing,
There are said to be people who see but can't live up to colors too,
This post is for those who feel colors by living...

We talked about colors with our doctor after our routine eye follow-up. How do we see colors, how does sight troubles effect color vision? How does colors become more dull and mat as the contrast clarifying vision fades away...
Then we learned a piece of information that may lead us to new horizons. It was that, people who could only see light were able to learn colors! How? By the help of colored glass or other similar transparent material and a light source. The person who sees light can see the colored light, learn to differentiate between colors and learn them. This case was different from seeing a colored object.

Our efforts to find colored glass crossed our paths with stained glass artists. We met with gleaming  people, explained what we wanted and they cut out pieces that we picked up from the colored glass they had in hand, thanks for their efforts...

I hope this whole activity which took around half a day including the preparation at home to present these as a toy to CAN will be a joyful and educating experience. Thanks to all who have contributed, that is the CANs TEAM :)

Bisiklete binmek / Bicycling

"Hayat bisiklete binmek gibidir,

CAN'a ilk bisikletini babam almıştı, üç tekerlekli, mavi, hani şu arkadaki uzun kolu sayesinde kolayca itilip idare edilebilenlerdendi. Geçen yıl babaannemizin doğumgünü hediyesi olarak CAN'a iki tekerlekli bir bisiklet aldık.

CAN aslında hazır görünüyordu.

Aferin CAN, aferin sana!

"Life is like riding a bicycle,
To keep your balance, you must keep moving."
"Some jobs are like riding a bicycle,
Once you learn them you never forget how..."

OK, but what is riding a bike like?
When and how is it mastered that so many things revert to it?
Like everyone rides a bike,
Like it is not otherwise possible...

Generally children learn to ride a bike somewhere between the ages 3-8. Although developmental abilities is a factor, there are other criteria like the availability of such a bike an an safe environment to ride it in. If there is one thing for certain, it is that for many of the children riding a bike is a lot of fun and also a very good exercise.

My father has bought CAN's first bicycle; three wheels, blue, it was one of those that had a long handle at the back that is used to push and manage the bike. CAN was 2 years old and had loved that bike, he used it excessively. Although he did put his feet on the pedals as we pushed him, when he was in charge he always pushed the bike by his feet on the ground. We decided this was a first habit and we needed a new bike to get over it. Last year we bought CAN a two wheeled bike as his grandmother's birthday present. CAN had picked up this bike and he started by walking around with it, then we struggled for him to paddle for a while.

CAN seemed to be ready. He sat on the bike relaxed and stable, his leg muscles seemed to be strong enough to push the pedals too, but something was still missing... Finally he started taking out his bike with his father in the afternoons to the courtyard at the back. And a few days ago CAN did this too. Now we have a son who shouts out with happiness as he rides his bike. He is a very happy kid who wears his helmet, handles his handlebar articulately and blows his horn in joy :)

Bravo CAN, bravo to you!

İlkokul / Primary school

Bugün CAN'ın e-okul sisteminde adrese göre otomatik kaydının yapıldığı ilköğretim okuluna gittim. Ağustos sıcağında, okulun girişindeki ağacın gölgesinde oturanlar vardı. "Oğlum bu yıl ilkokula başlayacaktı" deyince hemen içlerinden biri "hayırlısı olsun" dedi ve elindeki listeyi göstererek doğum tarihini sordu. CAN'ın adını buldu ve "evet, burada başlayacak" dedi.

CAN'ın listede adının yanına "erteleme" yazdılar.

Today I went to the primary school that CAN has been automatically assigned to according to our address in the e-school system. On a hot August day, there were people sitting in the shade of the tree in the school entrance. As I said that "my son was to start primary school this year" one of the people gave me his best wishes and asked for CAN's birthday, pointing the list in his hand. He found CAN's name and said "yes, he will start here". And I said that "he will not be starting this year and that is what I am here to report".

I found out that those people were the school manager and assistant manager. I wrote down a petition for CAN to start primary school with one year delay and attached the report we have taken from the hospital. They noted down "delayed" next to CAN's name in the list. "You are his mother, you have the best judgement for him" they said. I have left the school in tears, I am still crying...

The school was a colorful place like a child,
The people I have met were sparkling like decent man,
I know children attending that school too like rain,
My CAN is a child too just like a flower...
